كنت في دردشة إلكترونية مع زميل وصاحب قلم حارق ناصحاً إياه بعدم الكتابة في الثالوث المحرم : السياسة والدين والجنس وأخطأت في كتابة الأخيرة عندما استبدلت حرف النون بالميم لتصبح «الجمس». أحمد الله بأنني لم أخطئ في الكلمتين الأوليين فربما تخرج كلمة تقودني لتهمة العمالة أو الردة وما أسهلهما من تهمتين.

في كل مرة كان يتفنن في اختلاق طريقة تجعلنا نكره الدرس والكلمات والكتابة، بصراحة كان أستاذا غبياً ومملا جداً، وفي كل مرة كان يطلب منا أن نكتب عن الأشياء البسيطة من حولنا، كان يريدنا أن نعبر ونكتب ونختار الكلمات التي تناسب فكرته ورؤيته، وبالطريقة التي ينظر بها للأشياء، يريدنا أن نتسلى بالكلمات ونتفق في كل شيء، في الألوان والذوق والشكل ونكرر نفس الأفكار، كنا أكثر من أربعين طالبا، وكان يريد لموضوعنا أن يكون واحدا، سطرنا واحد، وكلمتنا واحدة!.

لا أذكر أن أحداً هاتفني من خارج الرياض وأنا فيها إلا وسألني عن الجو.. جو الرياض.. ثم ألحّ في السؤال عن الزحمة. وإذا تجاوزت الإجابات التقليدية المعتادة، في المهاتفات الجوالية المنقادة.. .. التي لا يفسدها إلا الإكثار من تبادل عبارات مكرورة مجرورة مثل: (كيف الحال.. طاب الحال)، إلى أن يتجرأ أحد الطرفين المتقاذفين بها، فيكسر حالة الجمود على الخط الساخن بينهما.. إذا فعلت ذلك، وها أنذا أفعل، فإني أقول: إني وجدت جو الرياض هذه المرة أكثر من حار في فصل غير حار، ولقيته يغسل غبرة بعد غبرة، بصحوة تلو صحوة، ورأيته يغص بالسيارات، ويَشرق بالناس. لقد وجدت الرياض غير الرياض قبل عام على أقل تقدير.

King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) is a teaching hospital. Periodic meetings are held by the hospital director and faculty members; nothing out of the ordinary here.

In a recent meeting, “Donate A Smile For KAUH” video was criticized. As a student, I wasn’t included in the meeting but bad news travel fast. A number of faculty members consider our video a form of “mujahara bil ma39iya” (boasting of sinful acts. which is punishable in this country), and are calling for it’s removal off YouTube.

Though the majority of faculty and students agree that the video succeeded in achieving it’s purpose (which is making people smile), some believe that it speaks of our decadent selves. I still don’t understand how us making a video about smiling would lead certain individuals to label us as morally degraded.

A technical note, if I may:
- Permission from KAUH director and Dean of Medicine were taken before the shooting started.
- All individuals appearing in the video signed a consent form.
- All shooting was done within hospital boundaries.

Do you think our video is offensive to you as a Saudi/Muslim/KAUH inhabitant? If so, please explain the manner in which you find it offensive.

Do you believe the video should be removed?

امتلئت قلوبنا سعادةً وهناء عندما استلمت يدك الكريمة تقرير لجنة تقصي الحقائق في كارثة جدة من الأمير خالد الفيصل جزاه الله خيراً على أداء واجبه بسرعةٍ نشكره وبقية أعضاء اللجنة عليها.

كنت يا خادم الحرمين السبَّاق إلى عقد هذه اللجنة في العلن مشركاً إخوانك وأبنائك المواطنين -والضحايا منهم خاصة- في صلواتٍ لا تتوقف أن يوفقك الله ويوفق اللجنة فيما أسندت إليهم.

اخبار الساعة التاسعة الا ربع

سعدت بالأمس حين علمت عن قناة علي اليوتوب اسمها قناة صح، تقدم اخبار الساعة التاسعة الا ربع بطريقة ساخرة علي طريقة سكتشات تقدمها برامج عالمية معروفة مثل Saturday night live و Mad tv قامت بعض القنوات الفضائية العربية بتقليدها، و لكن لا اعتقد ان نجاحها كان بالشكل المطلوب.

ضحكنا أنا و زوجتي علي ماشاهدناه و تناقشنا في موضوع كميه المواهب الموجودة و التي لا تجد الدعم، ولا التدريب و لا الصقل . ولذلك أري ان برنامج مثل ستار اكاديمي علي هيافته، يلقي إقبالا كبيرا في عالمنا لعدم وجود منافذ لتلك المواهب لتظهر، فيشاهدها كل من لديه رغبة في تعلم مهارات فنية او مشاهده هذه المواهب لاسباب اخرى .

عن نفسي لم استطع متابعة اي سنة من سنوات ستاراكاديمي لأني بصراحة أجده برنامج هايف، و لكني افهم لم قد يتابعه متابعوه.

بالطبع جاء النت و أعطى هذه المواهب الشابة و الواعده الفرصة في تقديم مواهبهم، مثل مالك نجر، و الان الشباب في قناة صح، و اعتقد ان الكثير و الكثير سيظهرون قريبا.

تأتي المشكلة الجديدة و هي القنوات التي ستتبناهم، و كل من يقوم عليها في هذا الوقت بصراحة خارج الموضوع، يكفي ان السلام الوطني السعودي الذي تم القاءه في مهرجان الجنادرية التراثي تم القاءه بواسطة ممثل لا يعرفه اصلا و استبدل كلمات بدل الكلمات الصحيحة، و ليست تلك المشكلة، المشكلة ان كل القائمين علي العمل لم يتكلم احدهم ليخبرهم بالخطأ… او المصيبه الاكبر ان لا احد من القائمين علي العمل الوطني يعرف السلام الوطني، فإما انه لا سعودي بينهم (رغم ان العمل لمهرجان سعودي) او انهم لم يقوموا بالبحث كما يجب، و كلها أعذار أسوا من بعضها!

قال الاخ عبدالعزيز حمزة انه يسعد عند رؤية مدونات جديدة، و أنا أيضاً اسعد لذلك، و لكني اسعد اكثر عندما آري مواهب قد استطاعت تطويع التكنولوجيا الجديدة لإظهار مواهبها.

In Saudi, the phrase “The customer is always right,” is not always applied. Instead, the phrase “Tab, eish n’sawi?” (Ok, so what should we do?) and “Ma ye’ seer” (That can’t be done,) are used more often than anything. Often the employees are not trained to feel capable of making independent decisions without referring to their boss or manager. Especially as the government is advocating more Saudis to replace foreigners in all fields of the workforce, more and more young Saudis are encouraged to get a job. While it was rare to see Saudis working as taxi drivers or at fast food restaurants, it is now quite common. At a rapid pace one can see Saudi employees accept jobs they would have never accepted in the past. This is good as Saudis should have first priority to jobs in their country, but the issue is since they have never worked in these types of fields prior, they struggle when it comes to work ethic and customer service. Just the other day, I was reminded of this issue when I needed to place an order from McDonald’s (Yes, McDonald’s delivers in Saudi – that’s how much it is loved here.)

So, it was around 3 o’clock in the afternoon and to give you an idea of how popular McDonald’s is in the KSA, let me tell you it took one hour and a half to for the phone connection to even go through, and when it finally did I was on hold for at least 20 minutes. When one of the guys finally picked up and after I had finished placing my order I was told “Sorry ma’am, we can’t deliver now.”

“Why can’t you deliver now?”

“There are too many orders, and no drivers are available.”

“Ok, so now what?”

“Call back after 40 minutes.”

“Ok, but just for the record, your service sucks, and this isn’t the first time this has happened to me. You need to find a solution.”

With a muttered “Aha…Thank your for calling Mac delivery,” he hung up.

Great, I have to go through this process all over again. Eventually I got ahold of Mac delivery, placed my order, and the food was delivered, but no this saga couldn’t end there. One pack of french fries was missing, so of course I had to call to alert them of the mistake.

Ding, ding…automated answering machine picks up. “Welcome to Mac delivery. We will be pleased to serve you after Magrib prayer, so please call back later.” (All shops and restaurants must close during prayer time in Saudi.)

Oops…I didn’t realize prayer time had already come around again. By then, it was already 6 p.m. and I had already been at this ordering cycle for 3 hours. When prayer was done, I called back and said that my order was missing ONE PACKAGE OF FRENCH FRIES. I was told it would be there in 15 minutes.

Well, an hour passed and the doorbell had still not rung, dinner was over, and no one wanted that pack of fries anymore, but I was determined to get it delivered just to get a point across: McDonald’s delivery, you need to pay more attention to the orders; you need to pay attention to your customers; you need to fix your delivery service; when someone pays for something, even something little and cheap as fries, they deserve to get IT!

When you dial McDonald’s central number, you get two options: press 1 to place your order, press 2 for complaints. First time, I pressed one and told some moron what my trivial issue was. Every time I ended what I had to say, there was silence.

“Do you understand what I’m saying? You speak English don’t you?”

“What do you need?”

“Freakin’ french fries, man – freakin’ french fries!”

Silence…

In a very serious tone I said, “So, what are you going to do about it?!” At this point, I was pissed and realizing how stupid this is that I’m arguing over half a potato, but this half-potato started symbolizing something more: customer service and work ethic.

“Call again, and press 2. I can’t help you,” said the inaudible guy on the phone.

“Can’t you transfer my call? If I hang up and dial again, I won’t get through for another hour.”

“No, ma’am. Call again and press 2.”

urghhh…If I could only squish you!

It was 9 p.m. and still no fries. I called and pressed 2 only to get an idiotic jerk on the phone. I explained my whole drama to him, and he kept answering back with nonsense. I think he struggled with half of the English words I was saying.

“Look, man. I placed an order at 4 p.m. It is now 9: 30 p.m. Do you get this? Is this acceptable that I’ve been ignored? I want the damn fries delivered now with compensation for having to put up with this service.”

“I don’t deal with orders. Call back and press 2.”

“No, I just talked to some guy on line 1, and he told me to call YOU.”

Silence…omg, is he that tongue-tied?

“Hello, are you there?” At this point, I switched to Arabic in an attempt to hopefully help the guy know what I was talking about. Big mistake. He suddenly thought he could talk trash and started replying with a rude attitude. I interrupted him by saying: “Don’t you dare talk to me this way!” and hung up before he could say anything. I gave up on convincing these guys of their corrupt service and customer treatment.

At midnight, the bell rang. Who could it be? I answered the door to have some exhausted Filipino guy throw a paper McDonald’s bag at me. “Thanks,” I said knowing he was only the poor guy driving the food around, and he was ready to go home after being forced to drop off this little last delivery of the night. I got no reply from him. Ok, that was weird…

Ironically, McDonald’s slogan is “I’m lovin’ it!” No McD, I’m really not…

I was really tired and ready to go to sleep, but I was happy to know I had freaked that lame Mac delivery phone operator into finding time in his busy schedule to coordinate a sliced, fried potato to be finally delivered to my door 8 hours late.
