Google Reader: Resumator makes hiring collaborative, paper-free

Assuming you're in a position of hiring new people to work for your company (instead of laying them off), there's a new productivity boosting service called The Resumator that launched early Wednesday. It's part job-posting tool, part paperwork reducer, and also manages to throw in a recommendation engine that tells you which Web job boards are worth posting to based on the kind of job you're trying to hire for.

Of all the features, I find the most attractive one to be the document organizer, which sorts submitted resumes into different buckets for each job. You can search through these and narrow them down into groups by keyword, making it simpler to see who has listed certain skills, schools, or workplaces. It uses Scribd to convert each file into a browser-friendly document, and throws in a few neat Webby features like a five-star rating system and optional checklist that lets you quickly give each applicant the yea or nay in a centralized location.

What I really like about this system is that it's collaborative. Say, for instance, you're involving a few people in your company with a hiring process, you can give each one of them access, and they can rate each applicant respectively. I had helped out with this in a previous job, and Resumator's system would have been a whole lot better than wading through paperwork, adding sticky notes, and marking up each person's printed resume.

Resumator costs $59 a month and lets you post and manage an unlimited number of jobs. If you're trying to hone your resume, also worth checking out is Razume where others can mark up your CV and tell you what areas need work (Disclosure, Razume founder and CEO Sam Blum is an old friend of mine).

The Resumator lets you dig through uploaded resumes and view them right in your browser using Scribd. You can also grant other members of your team access to this listing so they can rate and comment on applicants.

Google Reader: Open Source Free Download Manager v3 adds tons of new features

Free Download Manager has released version 3 of their application, and the new version sports several new features that make it an excellent option handling all your download duties.

The new release can now manage torrents as well as download and convert Flash video from sites like YouTube. A remote control feature has also been added, enabling web management of your downloads (like uTorrent's WebUI). FDM also allows you to preview certain files and can download partial contents of zip files.

At about 18mb installed, it's not as lightweight as rolling uTorrent, DownThemAll, and any one of the YouTube downloaders out there, but it's an excellent all-in-one option for people that like to keep things simple.

A full list of features is available on the FDM web site. It's released under the GPL and you can choose between the full version or the lite, which lacks the torrent, video conversion, upload, and language plugins (though you can install them later if you choose).

There's no portable download on FDM's site, but Portable Freeware Collection has one available.

Google Reader: google-perftools 1.0 Released

Nearly four years ago, we released our first major Open Source codebase, google-perftools, a set of tools to help developers create applications with better performance. We've just released version 1.0 of the software, which includes the fastest malloc implementation we've seen, as well as a thread-friendly heap-checker, heap-profiler, and cpu-profiler. We're now working on improving performance even more in multi-threaded, multi-processor environments, including adding support for Non-Uniform Memory Access. Work continues unabated to enhance portability and performance on a wide range of systems.

Many thanks to the community for testing and bug reports on various operating systems and processors! Your help has made perftools a useful system for a truly wide range of developers. We look forward to your feedback in the project's discussion group.

Tilt-shifting, that spiffy photo effect that makes real people and objects look like part of a tiny toy set, has become really popular lately.

Tilt-shift time lapse videos by Keith Loutit were recently featured all over the Internet, inspiring others to figure out how to achieve the effect in their own photos. You could Google a step-by-step tutorial, or you could save yourself the trouble and use Tiltshiftmaker.

Pop a photo into Tiltshiftmaker, move the sliders around to choose the area you want to focus on, and that's all there is to it. It seems to work best with photos that are shot from above and from a distance. If you need some inspiration, there's also Tiltshiftmaker's gallery you can check out and add your own photos to.
