Facebook Notes: A Little Sunlight on Plowman Scandal

Terry Burns at the Indianapolis Times has a piece up today which sheds a crack of sunlight onto the Lincoln Plowman scandal. Burns found a 5 year old FCC application by Plowman for a permit to build a cellular phone tower in which he claims to need the FCC license because "Applicant is a private investigator. Radios will be used to coordinate work in field at random places for unknown amount of times." The strange thng about this permit application is that in the field where you list contact information, Plowman listed Skylines Unlimited of Carlisle PA as the contact. After doing a little bit of searching I discovered Skylines Unlimited is a private cellular tower developer that owns several private cellular towers in the Indianapolis area. This reminds me of a story I heard a few years ago about the American Legion post in Broad Ripple next door to the post office there. A few years back, the men at the post were very pleased with a deal they had made with a private cell tower developer that would net them some cash upfront, a monthly rent payment, and a new larger flag and flagpole that would have electronics built into the pole that would allow the developer to operate a private cell tower in the heart of Broad Ripple. It was a win win win situation for the members of the American Legion post and for the cell phone users of Broad Ripple as well as the developer. After I heard that story and was retelling it in a bar, a guy who works for a cellular carrier overheard me and educated me a little about the dirty little secret of the wireless provider industry. Most of the traffic on wireless networks like AT&T and Verizon are carried via private developers' cell towers like the one in Broad Ripple. There is a lot of money at stake coming from the wireless carriers to private cell tower developers and a lot of pressure on these companies to build towers literally everywhere. This is why AT&T and Verizon have been touting their maps on TV lately. In the wireless biz coverage is everything. So how does this relate to the Plowman scandal? Well, in this case, you have a IMPD Major/City County Councilman who sits as chair of the Metropolitan Development Committee. A committee that would have jurisdiction over development of private cell towers and their placement, a very complicated task involving sight lines, FCC licenses and zoning issues. You can't just plop a tower down anywhere, there are very specific places these things can be built on. This is where Plowman comes in. From his chairmanship of the MDC, he has jurisdiction over any zoning variances that will need requested from the developers of private cell towers, including Skylines Unlimited, his partner on the application for several FCC licensed private towers in Marion County. We don't know what the FBI has on Lincoln Plowman, but in light of these recent discoveries, its beginning to become apparent what the situation is. We have a private tower developer, a CCC member and a red hot market for private tower builders to sell their excess wireless capacity to giant telecom companies. That rotten fish smell you just whiffed is coming from behind the comic books Plowman just sold on Craigslist.

Latest news is a confirmed case of the shingles after a visual diagnosis by a friend and a conversation with the nurse practitioner from my doctor’s office describing the exact symptoms and timeline. All the online resources about it match up as well so I’m 99% confident in the diagnosis..

Google Reader: Richard Graves: Climate Witnesses: A voice from the Cook Islands

Today, I wanted to highlight one of the TckTckTck campaign's Climate Witnesses, Ulamila Kurai Wragg, a mother and a journalist, she has seen the impacts of climate change worldwide and has a perspective we could all do well to listen to:

My name is Ulamila Kurai Wragg and I am from the Cook Islands.

When invited to speak about how climate change is impacting my island home at the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week in New York in September, I did not know what to expect.

But I felt positive because I was going to be part of this great team of people working to ensure that a fair, ambitious and binding deal is locked and sealed in Copenhagen come December.

I met the media and (as a journalist) I got a taste of my own medicine. Plus, I was more careful with my second language, English, and did my best to captivate whatever audience I had.

But nothing prepared me for what I felt when I encountered three inspirational women – Sharon Hanshaw from Biloxi, Mississippi; Constance Okollet from Uganda; and Ursula Rakova from the Carteret Islands in Papua New Guinea. I came with an open mind and I absorbed as much as I could from them.

We were part of the ‘TckTckTck Campaign’ as climate witnesses. The diversity in our representation gave life to our agenda to get global leaders to act and they must act fast.

They have to sign that moral deal because as climate witnesses we are testifying that we are now living and regularly dealing with rising seas, hurricanes, eroding shorelines, vanishing islands, flash floods and much more in our daily lives.

Constance’s story of hunger, Ursula’s fear of her island now ‘a paradise no more’ and Sharon’s life of rebuilding after ‘Hurricane Katrina’ moved me to tears. I could feel their fears and aching hearts because I am a mother of four children living on an island with receding shorelines.

My mother told me stories that I cannot repeat to my children because there is nothing here to prove that there was a creek that meandered around some swamp where they would catch little fish and feed eels. All we see today are dry beds half eaten away by the waves.

I live on the beautiful Vaima’anga beach in the Cook Islands, my fears are now mounting as we enter into the cyclone season. Yesterday we put extra nails into some new roofing irons and are stashing away emergency boxes in case we have to vacate our house. We have learnt to always “prepare to expect the unexpected”. Proactive rather than reacting.

We are teaching our children what to do when cyclones hit us, we are also warning them to stay away from the shores when they see big waves crashing pounding the lawns.

After New York, I felt that there was still more work needed to drive home the issue that leaders have to work on a fair deal and seal ASAP.

I now see that there are many layers to this issue of climate change but I am proud to hold up my corner as a climate witness. But I am not seeing the leaders working on theirs.

I will moan about the leaders and their moral obligations but I refuse to be a victim of the situation. We are standing up to do our own bit making sure that we stay alive to see this through.

 New York taught me that to be heard is to be seen.

Google Reader: Now Use Google Voice With Your Existing Phone Number

One of the sticking points with the otherwise highly convenient Google Voice service has been that you had a choose a new number to use with the service. If you had an existing number that everyone already knew and wanted to switch over, you were pretty much out of luck.

Luckily that changes today, with tonight’s Google announcement that you can now use Google Voice with an existing phone number. Also notably, you can now add Google voicemail service to any of the mobile numbers linked to your account. Think of it a bit like Gmail for voicemail.

Now when you first sign up for Google Voice you can choose between using your own number or choosing a new Google number. You still get many of Google Voice’s features when using your own number, including the Google voicemail feature you can now add to linked phones.

Unfortunately it’s not a full number port, and you won’t get all of the Google Voice features when using your own number — at least not yet. But especially if you have an older phone that doesn’t already have a nice visual voicemail interface, the Google voicemail feature alone might be reason enough to switch. The company also says it plans to roll out a full service compatible with your existing number, including other great features of Voice like conference calling, call screening, and listening into calls before deciding to pick up.
